PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Successfully demolished Point Hudson Marina structures
  • Accelerated project timetable facilitated by favorable weather and efficient piling removal
  • Collaborated with Port of Port Townsend engineers and permitting agencies
  • Improved efficiency in placing rock during construction through valuable lessons learned
  • The new jetty's design life is 40 years, with additional thickness added to potentially extend service life by 20 years

Innovative Techniques in Jetty Reconstruction

Orion successfully completed the initial phase of the Point Hudson Marina reconstruction project, allowing for an early reopening in January 2023. The project involved replacing the shorter north jetty, using Orion's crane and supply barges. The original estimated completion date of early March 2023 was surpassed due to favorable weather conditions, effective collaboration, and expedited piling removal and replacement.

Orion collaborated with the Port, permitting agencies, and consultants on problem-solving, as well as strategic planning. Lessons learned during the jetty work will enhance efficiency in the second phase of the project to replace the longer south jetty. Orion's improved techniques, such as efficient rock placement, demonstrate our commitment to continual improvement.

The reconstruction included installation of 178 steel piles, rising 16 feet above low tide level and surpassing the height of the replaced creosoted wood piles. Our workboats were strategically positioned for tasks like piling caps, and shoreline repair work was scheduled to address damage caused by high tides and winds in November 2022. The completed Phase 1 showcases the new jetty's functionality and serves as a testament to its role in safeguarding Point Hudson for decades.
