Orion’s Engineering & Consulting group served as the Engineer of Record on this Design-Build project in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. Port Royal Cruise Pier boasts an innovative floating SeaWalk – the first of its kind in the Caribbean. Orion constructed the facility, including steel pile-supported elements, wooden deck, 200T bollards, and a sea walk. The project was built in the vicinity of the historic “Sunken City of Royal,” which has been declared a World Historic Heritage Site by UNESCO.
Orion successfully designed and constructed this new cruise pier in Port Royal, marking a significant milestone as the first cruise facility in the entire Caribbean to adopt the innovative floating retractable Cruise Pier developed by SeaWalk. The scope of work included the construction of essential components to support the SeaWalk, such as the steel pile-supported concrete head section, steel pile-supported trestle with concrete caps, a wooden deck with handrails, shore-side 200T bollards anchored to a 36” steel pile, a concrete abutment wall, and a 36” pile-supported SeaWalk carriage rest.
The project's strategic location near the Historic "Sunken City of Royal," a UNESCO World Historic Heritage Site, added a layer of complexity to the construction process. Orion navigated this challenge with precision and care, respecting the cultural and historical significance of the surroundings.
