Targa BDK 2B-4B

Our Marine and Engineering & Consulting groups led the Design-Build for Targa’s Ship Dock #4 reconstruction in Houston. The phased project included demolishing the old timber pile dock, introducing a new concrete platform with advanced features, and dredging for a 42ft deep berth. Schneider Engineering played a key role as the design engineer.

A Modern, Efficient Ship Dock in Houston, TX

Orion, in collaboration with our Engineering & Consulting group, played a pivotal role as the Design-Build contractor in the comprehensive reconstruction of Targa’s Ship Dock #4 along the Houston, Texas ship channel. The project unfolded in carefully orchestrated phases to accommodate the bustling shipping schedule of the client's other ship and barge docks.

The project began with demolition of the antiquated timber pile ship dock and timber pile pipe rack. Subsequently, a state-of-the-art dock platform emerged, supported by pre-stressed concrete piling and fortified with reinforced concrete pier caps. The deck provided a foundation for essential components, including three LPG marine liquid loading arms, a vapor control arm, a compact hydraulic service crane, gangway, and an intricate network of mechanical piping, valves, and control equipment. Notably, twelve breasting and mooring steel pile monopile dolphins were strategically incorporated to enhance structural integrity and operational efficiency.

A critical aspect of the project involved dredging approximately 220,000cy of material from the front of the ship dock. This strategic dredging initiative was executed by Orion to create a 42ft deep berth, catering to the docking requirements of large liquid cargo tanker ships.

The collaboration between our Marine and Engineering & Consulting teams ensured the successful construction of a modern, functional, and efficient ship dock, poised to meet the diverse demands of maritime operations in the Houston ship channel.
