U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Tampa Maintenance Dredging

The Tampa Harbor Maintenance Dredging 34-Foot Project, Upper Channels was a 270-day initiative in Hillsborough County, Florida. Collaborating with fellow contractors, Orion navigated shared resources and innovative solutions. Our work involved dredging channels to a 34-foot depth, with meticulous material disposal and rigorous environmental monitoring. Overcoming the challenges of working with third parties for access to their dredge areas, active airport adjacency, and rocks/debris within the dredge area, Orion showcases our expertise in channel excavation and seamless project execution.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Dredged channels to 34’ MLLW with 2’ allowable overdepth
  • Provided material removal, barge transportation, and offloading to remote site
  • Dredged near an airport with active runways
  • Handled rocks and debris within dredge areas
  • Coordinated with third parties for access to dredge areas
  • Coordinated with another dredging contractor sharing disposal area
  • Negotiated in-house resource sharing with another contract owner
  • Environmental monitoring (species, turbidity, bird, sea turtle trawl sweeping)

In the Tampa Harbor Upper Channels project in Hillsborough County, Florida, Orion implemented several innovative solutions. Coordination of a shared disposal area was required with another dredging contractor. In addition, Orion negotiated in-house resource sharing with another contract owner to facilitate the completion of multiple projects concurrently.

The project included dredging channels to 34 feet MLLW with a 2-foot allowable overdepth. Dredged material was removed, transported by barge, and offloaded to the Dredge Material Placement Facility (DMPF) 3-D, located approximately 4 nautical miles south from Port Sutton Entrance Channel. The scope encompassed environmental species monitoring, turbidity monitoring, bird monitoring, sea turtle trawl sweeping, and overall disposal operations management.

Challenges included working with third parties for access to their dredge areas, dredging near an active airport with runways, and managing rocks and debris within the dredge areas. The successful completion of this project showcases Orion's dredging expertise.
