Port Everglades Southport Turning Notch Extension

Orion secured a contract for the Southport Turning Notch Extension in Port Everglades, Florida - the largest expansion in its history. The project involved installing steel HZ combi-wall bulkhead, eco-friendly bulkhead combi-wall, anchor systems, concrete deck, and more. This ambitious project, awarded by Moss/Kiewit JV, spanned two years.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Installation of approximately 3,500 linear feet (LF) steel HZ combi-wall bulkhead
  • 1,600 LF of environmentally friendly bulkhead combi-wall
  • Anchor system with over 20,000 LF of tie rods
  • Over 9,500 cubic yards of cast-in-place encapsulated concrete deck structure
  • Installation and later removal of approximately 860 LF temporary containment HZ combi-wall bulkhead
  • Temporary containment facilitated mass-excavation of Turning Notch New Basin

Historic Expansion in Port Everglades

Orion was awarded a contract from a joint venture of Moss & Associates and Kiewit Infrastructure South Co. (Moss/Kiewit JV) for the construction of the Southport Turning Notch Extension in Port Everglades, Broward County, Florida, marking the largest expansion project in Port Everglades history.

The scope of the project included the procurement and installation of approximately 3,500 LF of steel HZ combi-wall bulkhead over 1,600 LF of environmentally friendly bulkhead combi-wall. An anchor system was implemented consisting of over 20,000 LF of tie rods, along with over 9,500 CY of cast-in-place encapsulated concrete deck structure, and related fenders, bollards, and appurtenances. The project also involved the installation and subsequent removal (final piece to complete) of approximately 860 LF of a temporary containment HZ combi-wall bulkhead. This step was crucial to isolate the expansion area and facilitate the mass-excavation of the Turning Notch New Basin.
